You have all heard the old saw about the folk who see the glass half full versus the folk
who see the same glass as half empty. The heroic perspective is similar. To be the most
comfortable-with-ourselves and strongest hero we can be, it helps if we shift our perspective
so that the challenges we meet are not seen in terms of the negative. Even the painful ones.
Yes, I know. Much easier said than done.
I do not say it blithely or without personal experience. I have faced a whole lot of pain in
my lifetime so far...physically, mentally, and emotionally. And yet, through my own experiences
and in watching and helping others, I have come to know this unshakeable truth: a
shift in perspective from negative to positive is exactly what helps us create our inner strength and stability.
Yes, bad things happen. But if we tighten and narrow our focus to only see the badness, we loose
the ability to examine the pain, the challenge, and the obstacle to see:
- What we can learn from it,
- How we can benefit from it,
- How it can strengthen our inner self, and
- How we can use this experience to guide us in the future.
In addition, you may also want to share what you have discovered with others, helping them as
they travel their own hero's journey of life. What the mythologist Joseph Campbell called
"Returning with the Elixir".
We are all heroes. We are all the hero of our own life story.
It is up to you to decide what kind of hero you will be.
